Coming at projects as “business improvement” instead of “web design” was a revolutionary idea to me, even though it was how I was approaching projects already and not charging for it. Marie is not just changing individual lives, she’s changing the industry.

Tell us a bit about you! Who are you, and what do you do?

I’m Rachel C Vane aka RC Vane, I am an online strategist and graphic designer. I help solo business owners and small businesses not only look great online and in person, but also generate more higher-quality leads online.

Where were you before DXc?

Before DXc I was overworked and underpaid.

I was doing a lot of work for people without realizing the value I was actually giving. It was common for me to be a business coach, marketing strategist, copywriter, designer and developer for my website clients, but I was only charging for the design and development part. I was letting my business run me.

Why did you sign up for DXc?

I was ready for the next evolution of my business. Exhausted from work and cash flow stress, I knew I needed to make some huge changes to begin to create the business I wanted. I also recognized my lack of systems were holding my business growth back.

What are the people in DXc like (including instructor + fellow students)?

So nice! Nice, but honest in the most helpful way. They’re supportive no matter what type of help you need: emotional, client relations, systems, software, marketing, and just about anything you can imagine. Having a place to go where I know I won’t be judged or put down for expressing my feelings or asking a question has been an invaluable part of DXc for me.

Marie is amazing to work with. She listens and she gets to the core of an issue almost immediately. There is no judgement, just pure empathy and sound advice on what to do.

What were some of your breakthroughs?

My biggest “Aha” was how incredibly I was undervaluing what I do. That was my single biggest takeaway. Another couple: Community is necessary for me to thrive, and boundaries with systems are an integral part of good, strong client relationships.

My biggest DXc takeaways have been life lessons, not just business ones.

What are your takeaways from working with Marie?

In a world of more and more automated web design and development, web designers and developers need an edge over the “Squarespace’s.”

Coming at projects as “business improvement” instead of “web design” was a revolutionary idea to me, even though it was how I was approaching projects already and not charging for it. Marie is not just changing individual lives, she’s changing the industry.

What was your favorite part of the DXc experience?

Mentoring & the Facebook group were my 2 biggies. The content is amazing. The templates are even better for practical use.

How have you applied the strategies you’ve learned?

Oh my. I just sent a proposal for $12,000 the other day. Then I met with the prospect and I said that number out loud to her face. OUT LOUD. This is over $4000 than any previous proposal I’ve ever sent and I actually felt totally justified in the pricing (I even thought maybe I was underbidding it!).

Getting into the mindset that it is actually okay to value what I do and then to charge for the value I give. I completely owe that huge mindset change to DSS.

What would you say if you were recommending DXc to a friend?

I would say it is part supportive community, part practical advice and totally life-changing if you let it be.

How do you feel right now?

Optimistic about my business future. I have work ahead of me to get to where I want to be, but I’m doing it.

I feel like have the power to create the business I want.

I can choose who I work with, how I work with them and I can make systems that work only for me.

What’s next for you?

I’m working on implementing everything I’ve learned. I’m also creating a product to help web designers and clients collect all the content for a website, kind of like a “Website Prep Process.” It will include resources and a step-by-step guide to help clients get all their website content done to be completely ready for a web designer to create a site.
